Artist’s statement

Millinery is my passion. I began making hats for my young daughter in 2000. Soon I began designing and creating costumes and hats for Halloween and school plays. I donated my time and materials to create costumes for the 2006 Reid Elementary production of Peter Pan. That same year, seeing that other children in my daughter’s class did not have costumes for the annual third grade trip to Crossroads Village (Genesee County living history Museum circa 1880), I made and donated bonnets, caps and aprons to Reid Elementary. After a class project and trip to a renaissance fair in 2009, my son requested a period hat, and thus my hat making turned further back in time. I now create a variety of historically inspired hats.
I wanted to expand my knowledge of hat making techniques, so I took a course in millinery from Amy Hamilton of Ohio in 2013. There I learned how to block hats, working with felt, straw, and fabric covered buckram. I loved my new found skills so I started a business and began making hats to sell to the public. I now do commission work and sell at several arts and craft shows in Michigan. I like to make each piece unique, special for the person purchasing it. If you see something you like on my website, contact me and I can make a hat just for you!
